Windows 2000 Pro and Windows XP
When using QikKids in a network environment (either Access file sharing or SQL Server) you must consider concurrency restrictions when hosting the database on a non-server operating system. If you use Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Professional or Windows Vista to host your database, you are limited to a maximum of 10 concurrent connections. If you are networking only a couple of computers, then these restrictions probably won't affect you. However, if you are also using the server for Internet Connection Sharing, or hosting other network connections then it's not difficult to use up these 10 connections.
Note: Windows XP Home has a limit of 5 connections. Therefore we would not recommend using Home as your database server.
Windows 2000 Server and Windows 2003 Server do not have a 10 connection limit, and are much better suited to hosting databases.
Hosting Databases on a Domain Controller
If your database server is also a domain controller, you should be aware that Windows will disable hard drive caching by default if the Active Directory store is on a non-redundant hard drive. This will significantly reduce the performance of your database. To correct this, install additional hard drives for database hosting, or mirror the existing drive and enable hard drive write caching in the device manager.
