Note: The following information does not apply to QikKids 4 Enterprise. Enterprise users should have their database backed up by their database administrator.
It is very important that you regularly backup your QikKids data, in fact, unless you are keeping paper duplicates of everything (not recommended) you are legally required to do so. Once per day is ideal, once per week should be the minimum. Remember that in the event of data loss, you will need to re-enter all the information back to your last good backup.
Backup Systems
The QikKids database expands in proportion to the number of children you have attending each day. QikKids includes a comprehensive, built in backup system that can backup and restore all your critical QikKids data in a couple of minutes. If you are using floppy disks, we would strongly suggest moving over to a USB Flash, Zip, CD drive.
Floppy Disk Mileage
If you are using normal 1.44MB floppy disks, QikKids will typically store about years worth of information on a disk, less if you are using the optional Payroll and General Ledger modules. QikKids will not back up to more than 1 floppy disk, so you should not rely on floppy disks as a long term backup solution.
QikKids backup files are stored as zip files, they can be restored by QikKids, or by popular archiving programs such as Winzip.
Other Backup Systems
The QikKids Backup System will work with any type of mountable drive, including USB Memory Sticks, Zip and Recordable CD's and DVD's. If you are using a tape backup system, you will use the backup software supplied with the tape drive rather than the QikKids software. In this case, set your software to backup the entire "program files\palm technology" directory on a nightly schedule.
Tape backup systems are useful for backing up large amounts of data, for instance most tape drives will easily backup your entire hard drive. If you have a lot of other software that requires regular backing up, you should talk to your local computer expert about what kind of system would be best suited to your requirements.
See Using CD's for Backup and Claims for more information in configuing CD backup in Windows XP.
Network Installations
A network installation of QikKids has the primary data file (data.mdb) stored on another computer. The rest of the QikKids program is stored locally on each computer that has access to the system. In this scenario only a single set of data files is backed up. The QikKids backup system can backup a network database (though make sure all other copies of QikKids have been closed). Typically the data files are stored on a server that already has its own backup system, so QikKids backup is not required.
Note: Permission to backup and restore data is granted as a per user right. See Configure Users.
